In an interview with The Hill, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) blasted Trump for the “insurance scam” he’s creating, saying that the president’s tax cuts and infrastructure investments have been “all about putting himself in the best possible position to be reelected.”
Trump, Schumer added, has “been so dishonest about what his policies actually mean for working people and the middle class.”
Schumer told The Hill that Trump’s tax cut and infrastructure programs are “the biggest scam in history” and “have not delivered” for working Americans.
“These are the biggest tax cuts for the richest Americans in history,” he added.
Schumer said Trump’s health care overhaul was a “bailout for insurance companies” and is “going to leave millions of Americans with more debt than they have ever seen.”
He called Trump’s infrastructure plan “a big giveaway” to the private sector, while also slamming Trump for his failure to support his plan to overhaul the health care system.
“We’ve seen this before, this is a massive scam,” Schumer said.
“And it has not delivered.”
Trump has been trying to use the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to “insure” his supporters against Democrats.
But many Republicans have long argued that the ACA is not working for the American people and that the law has created too many problems for working families.
According to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis, the ACA has not been able to reduce the number of uninsured Americans by nearly enough, and has increased the number that are sick.
“This is the most consequential election in our lifetimes,” Schumer told the Hill.
“It is the only election in which we can make a real difference in a way that will deliver real change to this country and the country we love.”
In his interview with the Hill, Schumer also said he’s concerned about how Trump is using his tax cuts to increase his personal wealth.
“I’m concerned that this administration is using tax breaks to enrich themselves,” Schumer responded.
“That is a scam.
That is a huge scam.”
He added, “We know that tax cuts have never actually delivered to working people.
They have made working people poorer.
They haven’t delivered to the middle and lower class.”
Trump said he will be a “major tax cut” for the middle classes if he wins the 2020 election.
Schumer has said he hopes Trump can “put himself in a position to run for reelection in 2020 and win, but we’re not going to see that happen.”
Trump’s White House has not released any detailed economic policy plans.
Schumer, however, has previously praised the president for making economic policy in an effort to help the American public.
In March, he said Trump has “created an economic platform that is working” and that “the American people want that.”
Schumer said that Trump has made some good economic policy, and that it’s important for Democrats to continue to support the president.
“Trump has a good economic agenda, he has a plan to get us out of the worst recession in modern American history, and we’ve seen it,” Schumer added.
“He’s a very capable president and he has an economic plan.
That’s what matters most.”
