Industrial unions are banned in WA after a ban imposed on the state’s major industry.
Industry Minister Tony Burke said the move was aimed at stopping unions from blocking projects in an industry which is the backbone of WA’s economy.
Mr Burke said unions were now banned from holding meetings or taking part in political campaigning on the job.
“We’ve got to take our focus off those things that are really affecting the health of our industry,” he said.
“That is, the health and safety of our workers and their families and the community.”
I’m not going to take any action that’s not good for the industry.
“These unions are taking a stance that’s hurting the industry, which I think is absolutely not good.”
Industry unions have previously complained about restrictions on their activities in the industry after the Government imposed a ban on the Australian Building and Construction Commission.
