The Free Enterprise Institute and Freedom Industrials are the latest high-profile examples of businesses that have come under fire from the American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative advocacy group that advocates for business-friendly legislation.
The conservative think tank has called the two groups “corporate welfare” and has been pressing lawmakers to remove them from the state commerce board.
It’s been pushing for the boards to ban or weaken the lobbying groups and has even called for the repeal of the state’s corporate welfare law.
“The state boards are required to act in the public interest and in good faith in the discharge of their responsibilities to ensure that they do not give undue influence to a handful of corporate welfare groups,” the group said in a statement.
“It is the duty of the boards and state legislators to uphold and protect the interests of the commonwealth in its commerce.”
